There are no doubts that the war in Afghanistan will heat up next year as the U.S. sends 30,000 more troops to the war-torn country, with nearly 20,000 of those troops expected to be ground soldiers.

With nearly 30,000 troops in the country right now, the additional men and women will double the force there, allowing Defense Secretary Gates and his generals many more options. And so while the war in Iraq shifts to security and rebuilding the long-ignored war in Afghanistan will come to the forefront again.

The call for additional troops will mean that the Army and the Marine Corps, in particular, will expect more deployments, which means more sacrifices will be expected from military spouses and children.

Early this year the Marine Corps leadership floated the idea of pulling the Marines completely out of Iraq, and taking the fight over to Afghanistan while the Army stayed to handle the war in Iraq. Since the success of the surge, there has been some concern that Marines are being used more like occupation forces than the aggressive fighting forces they are.

Because the Marine Corps has been so heavily involved in the fight for Iraq, some Marines are concerned that the expeditionary capabilities of the Marine Corps will begin to atrophy. Traditionally, Marines are Naval-based infantry that attack from ships, take land and then allow the Army Soldiers to enter and take over security functions.

In many ways the Marine Corps are being used like Army infantry Soldiers, and some fear that this garrison existence will deprive the Marines of their traditional expeditionary role.

The Marines, for their part, are no strangers to calls from both inside and outside the military, questioning the role of the Marine Corps. Since World War II, the existence of the Marine Corps has been rock solid, yet there have been times in American history where the special mission of U.S. Marines was not appreciated.

Marine leaders have recently expressed concern that another of the casualties of the Marine commitment in Iraq, is that Marine junior officers (lieutenants and captains) have not had time for sea duty and the accompanying knowledge base that differentiates Marine infantry officers from his Army counterpart.

Marines stationed aboard U.S. Navy ships began all the way back in the Revolutionary War and is a rich and important part of the Marine’s naval heritage. One only need to look back on the historic battles of the Second World War in the Pacific, to witness the lethal blow that Marines embarking from amphibious vehicles can have on an entrenched enemy. Although the struggle to seize back Pacific islands from the Japanese was conducted at a great cost in human life, no one would doubt the effectiveness and skill of the Marine Corps.

Although no one can predict what the battlefields of the future will look like, it’s certain that expeditionary Marine Corps forces will play a significant role in any future conflict.

Many political pundits and stay at home dad armchair general TV watchers think our young President is doing a fabulous job in Iraq and Afghanistan. But, do not be so quick to believe this, after all Pakistan is on the verge of collapse by the Al Qaeda, whom we are fighting and they are hiding out within Pakistan’s border making it really tough to get at them, although we are getting a few key members of their group.

One big problem that our President has caused is the huge media event over the “torturing” issues and the release of documents that puts the United States and our CIA in a very bad light, this does wonders for Al Qaeda recruiting and is allowing their ranks to swell, which could be enough to take over the Pakistani Government. Further, these torturing issues are being played on Al Jazeera in the Middle East and hurting our relations with allied countries there as well.

So, this is one of the reasons that I give President Obama an “F” grade in Afghanistan and Iraq, but it is not the only reason, so let me explain. President Obama also failed to impress NATO Nations to give more support for his coalition in Afghanistan and he now has actually less multi-national support than Bush did, far less. Again, we are talking F as in failure for our new president, so apparently all his talks on his European trip were all show and no go.

In Iraq, our young President promised to bring the troops home immediately, but it appears we have won in Iraq, thanks to Bush, Obama now knows he better not bring the troops home otherwise risks all that has been accomplished and will find the Iraqi government collapses and Iran will move right in. Great work Obama, he basically has done nothing, and his naivety before the election is making him look really silly if not downright ignorant of the situation. So, an “F” grade it is.
